What are OBD Codes?

OBD (On-Board Diagnostics) codes are standardized diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) used by vehicle onboard computers to identify malfunctions in various vehicle systems. These codes help mechanics, fleet managers, and vehicle owners diagnose issues, ensuring timely maintenance and repairs. OBD codes are retrieved using an OBD-II scanner, which reads data from the vehicle’s electronic control unit (ECU).

OBD codes follow a standardized format, typically consisting of five characters:

  1. First Character (System Indicator):
    • P (Powertrain: Engine & Transmission)
    • B (Body: Airbags, Lighting, Climate Control, etc.)
    • C (Chassis: Brakes, Steering, Suspension)
    • U (Network & Vehicle Integration: Communication Issues)
  2. Second Character (Code Type):
    • 0: Standardized (SAE-defined codes used by all manufacturers)
    • 1: Manufacturer-Specific (Custom codes unique to a brand)
  3. Third Character (Subsystem):
    • 1 & 2: Fuel and Air Metering
    • 3: Ignition System
    • 4: Emissions Controls
    • 5: Speed Control & Idle Control
    • 6: Computer & Output Circuit Issues
    • 7, 8, 9: Transmission Issues
  4. Fourth and Fifth Characters (Specific Fault Code):
    • These digits specify the exact nature of the issue.
  1. Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs)
    • Permanent Codes: Stored until the issue is repaired.
    • Pending Codes: Detected anomalies that haven’t triggered a warning light yet.
    • Stored Codes: Logged in the system after an issue is confirmed.
  2. Readiness Monitors
    • Systems that track whether specific emissions and performance checks have been completed.
  3. Freeze Frame Data
    • Captures sensor values at the moment a fault occurs, helping with troubleshooting.
